Tom Vennerbeck…..maybe it sounds corny, but I think he brings out the best in all of us….

Do you remember that commercial in the 90s about the chemical company BASF – “we don’t make the car seat, we make the car seat BETTER….we don’t make the blah-blah, we make the blah-blah BETTER?” That’s exactly what my friend Tom Vennerbeck does. He doesn’t really do a damn thing, except he brings out the best in us. Every darn one of us – he pulls every single one of us in, and he holds us in there, one by one – from the artists to the national magazine editors, to the homeless and politicians and people with mental illnesses and the college students and social workers and the millionaires and the retired do-gooders and the interior designers and realtors and church people and the land developers and historians and the writers and cat lovers and the ex-convicts among us – and believe me – when there are ex-convicts among us, they know Tom too (he feeds and houses them). He brings us ALL in like no other fisherman I’ve ever seen – sometimes he makes us uncomfortable (to make his point) but mostly, he focuses on us and loves us and reels us in a new way into our own community. And he shifts us. He makes us all sit down and talk to each other and nobody seems to want to leave and everyone feels part of something…..well……different.  Better……. in some strange way. Alternative…   Thanks, Tom.  So cool…….
