Long lanes of the Eastern Shore

There are so many long lanes in this region – long lanes with serious trees, planted long ago by people thinking ahead, far ahead. They create such a sense of place. When I stop to look, I always imagine who it was that conceived and planned these vistas, who – hole by hole, tree by tree, foresaw and created these magnificent lanes.  Look at the boxwood lane in the middle, above, and imagine how it looked back in the 30s, 40s – they were probably tiny little things, planted far apart from each other. I’d love to get a glimpse of them during each decade in their past, building up to this mature, dramatic scene. Fantastic.
