Late January afternoons….

….have a look and feel all their own. Crisp air, quiet. The land turns maize, golden-tan against deep gray skies. I watch the ice come and go without boredom – it shifts with each tide. Days are simple. A time for solitude, for thinking. For bread making. The local churches sponsor weekly soup sales now through spring, with handmade cardboard signs stuck by the side of the road.

St. Michaels is filled with “closed for the season” signs – everyone returns April 1st. Rumor has it that we’re getting TWO sushi places this spring, and a new Mexican restaurant. Talbot goes multi-culti???? It’s about time. At the bank, a local woman was bitterly complaining about all of this sushi – “who the heck wants it?” I raised my hand…..and the teller giggled. I suppose the woman forgot for a moment that St. Michaels is all about the tourists. Clearly, the sushi is not meant for the locals. But hey – why so grumpy about sushi? You don’t like raw fish? Ok, but raw oysters…….. oh, they’re part of the local heritage……ahhhh…..gotcha.

  1. I LOVE sushi! I’d be happy to join you at one of the new restaurants this spring.

  2. And what about clams on the half shell? Yummy!

  3. Bring it all on, ladies! I think there is enough room for lots of food. St. Michaels can use as many choices as possible……more is more.

  4. Hate sushi but love your pictures.
