Harness racing at the Great Pokomoke Fair

Who knew about harness racing?

I had a chance to visit the Great Pokomoke Fair yesterday way down in Pokomoke City at the very bottom of Delmarva. It was a hot day, but there was some serious racing going on . Some dozen races, each with a thousand dollar purse. Whoa. That’s a lot of money for a couple times around the half mile track!

This Fair actually began in the early part of the 20th century. All of the usual components were present – animals, prize winning desserts, vegetables, flowers and the Democrats, sitting in a tent, talking politics. One older gentleman, upon hearing that I was from Missouri, mentioned that he follows Claire McCaskill on Twitter. They even held a cake auction. When Congressman Andy Harris showed up, the auction got really jumping – and a Smith Island Cake sold for eighty bucks. I don’t know if he bought it or someone else did, but it got pretty exciting – quickly.

It was a great day in Pokomoke City.
