A trip to Homestead Gardens

Founded in the early 1970s by Don Riddle, Homestead Gardens is now one of the largest independent garden centers in the country. It is definitely worth a trip to Davidsonville for a visit. Just south of Annapolis, Homestead Gardens is set in the picturesque rolling hills that we don’t have on this side of the Bay. It’s a beautiful drive down there.

A trip there yesterday included a solid hour of wandering around the greenhouses, looking at the Christmas displays, a train set up, poinsettias of every shape and color, gifts for all seasons. Impressive place. Not just plants, but  home accents, furnishings, birding supplies, garden art, stones and sculptures, food products – you name it. In fact, the first thing I saw yesterday when I walked in, was a sign for fresh, all-natural, free-range turkey for the holiday table.

Of course, in spring – this place really comes to life and the plant material – all grown by a recently sold division of the company – Homestead Growers – is among the best anywhere. As someone who has been involved in moving LOTS of plant material – I once ran a community gardening program where we spend tens of thousands of dollars on plants each year – I can tell you – these people produce plants of the highest quality.

Plus – Homestead Gardens is a destination. During the season, people come to spend the day here. With a coffee and food bar, ongoing lectures and classes, tons of indoor and outdoor space to wander in, this is the kind of place you’ll plan a day around. Click here for their website, and if you friend them on facebook, you’ll stay up to date with all of their classes, services, lectures and events.

LOVE this place!

  2. Indeed, it was! Thanks! Now, if I followed it with a plate of that awesome pasta with rapini and sausage you were talking about, THAT would make a PERFECT afternoon!

  3. I’ve heard wonderful things about Homestead Gardens….now seeing your photos (always a treat!)and reading about it, I’ve put it on the top of my list of day trips.

  4. Don’t forget their Christmas train display for the kiddos! A super highlight for the preschool set (and the preschoolers at heart). http://blog.homesteadgardens.com/?p=13477
