The Caroline Dorchester County Fair

The Caroline/Dorchester County Fair was held Aug 1 – 4 at the 4-H Park in Denton. The weather was hot and steamy, but that didn’t deter fair-goers.

Along with ice cream, jousting, games for kids, famous fair dinners and animal showing, this year’s events included the favorite “dress a goat” and greased pig contests, the Mid-Shore Idol contest, and entertainment every night.

Families gathered to cheer on their 4-H students who showed everything  from artwork and sewing to livestock. Seniors too, entered vegetables, photographs and decorated cakes for judging. An incubator with chicks hatching throughout the four days attracted young and old repeatedly, to watch fresh life emerge before their eyes.

BBQ chicken, crabcake dinners and pit beef fed the crowd Sweet tea was abundant. Green, blue and pink mouths attested to the deliciousness of the ice-cold snow cones.

In all, a reminder of a simpler rural life.

  1. OMG – that pig is the cutest ever! Love these photos, but especially the piglet ones. Don’t know if you know this about me, but I’m piglet-obsessed! Thanks for the great post, Kathy 🙂

  2. Country fairs are so much fun. Your photos remind me of the many I went to growing up in Texas.

  3. Yeah, Margaret and Karen – thanks! There’s something about county fairs and piglets for sure. This pig seemed to love the game of chase. Some of the other pigs who were being chased by big groups of older kids, didn’t seem to be having so much fun. But this little fella, with an audience and all that attention – pure pleasure, you could tell.

  4. Awesome photos!
