The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race

The 23rd annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race took off yesterday afternoon, with 29 schooners heading from the Bay Bridge to Portsmouth, VA.  Click here to track the boats online as they make their way down to the bottom of the Bay. With good weather and winds, the schooners are expected to arrive in Portsmouth sometime today.

The event promotes awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural resources and proceeds go to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Eastern Shore schooners in the race include Sultana, from Chestertown, and Prom Queen of Cambridge.

Kevin and Mike Kabler are both crew on Prom Queen. I woke up a coupe of times overnight to check their progress – they’ve been holding steady in second place all night long. It was a cold night! Around 4:30 am said it was 39 degrees.

Here’s a look at the scene yesterday morning in Baltimore Harbor.

  1. 10:50am – It’s neck and neck between Heron and Prom Queen (with Kevin and Mike on crew) for 1st and 2nd places. Roughly 60 miles of downwind racing remaining, with winds freshening throughout the afternoon – should make for an exciting finish around dusk this evening!

    • On second examination, it’s hard to say conclusively that several other boats aren’t also at the front of the pack: it appears the position data from the competing boats isn’t all updating together – some boats show their last update was hours ago, some just minutes ago. So looking at the map, you might be seeing the positions of some boats at the present, while the positions of other boats are shown from hours ago.

Oops – here we go – looks like data finally updated for a bunch of the boats, and Woodwind “suddenly” has a huge lead over everyone. It now looks like Heron and Prom Queen in a battle for 2nd and 3rd overall, and finishing around 5PM (not dusk).

  2. May I ask…what’s a “Wahoo” ? Is a group of boaters??
