The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race
The 23rd annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race took off yesterday afternoon, with 29 schooners heading from the Bay Bridge to Portsmouth, VA. Click here to track the boats online as they make their way down to the bottom of the Bay. With good weather and winds, the schooners are expected to arrive in Portsmouth sometime today.
The event promotes awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural resources and proceeds go to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Eastern Shore schooners in the race include Sultana, from Chestertown, and Prom Queen of Cambridge.
Kevin and Mike Kabler are both crew on Prom Queen. I woke up a coupe of times overnight to check their progress – they’ve been holding steady in second place all night long. It was a cold night! Around 4:30 am weather.com said it was 39 degrees.
Here’s a look at the scene yesterday morning in Baltimore Harbor.
